Senator Collins will not back anti-abortion Supreme Court nominee
2018-07-02
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A key moderate Republican U.S. senator said on Sunday that she will not support a nominee to fill a soon-to-be-vacated seat on the Supreme Court who would overturn a landmark legal ruling that supports a woman’s right to abortion.

The comments by Susan Collins, a frequent Senate swing vote, narrowed the path to confirmation facing any nominee Republican President Donald Trump selects to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, who is retiring from the high court.

"I would not support a nominee who demonstrated hostility to Roe v. Wade," Susan Collins told CNN’s "State of the Union" program, referring to the 1973 landmark abortion decision.

Abortion was expected to be a key topic for senators when they question Trump’s nominee in confirmation hearings.

#15  Has Collins supported anything Trump wants?

#14  "Let's re-institute some 'Checks and Balances' on the Imperial Supreme Court."

How about a 2/3 vote by the States to nullify any decision of the SCT?

#13  What if ALL Supreme Court Rulings had to be approved by the US Senate in the very next session and a 2/3 Majority would revoke them. Let's re-institute some 'Checks and Balances' on the Imperial Supreme Court. Actually, it would be Fun, in a ghoulish sort of way.

#12  Hence the artful dance-around in hearings

#11  I thought that potential supreme court justices are not supposed to predict how they would rule on hypothetical cases, such as abortion, but only explain explain their general principles and why they ruled as they did in actual cases that passed before them on the bench.

#10  This is how you take a golden, once in a lifetime opportunity and turn it into another Justice Kennedy. Thanks, RINOs.

#9  She's said no so much why is she still in the party?

#8  Any conservative female or black (or the gods forbid, both!) who gets appointed will be attacked even worse by the left. It destroys their narrative and they need to punish those that go off the plantation.

#7  Nominate a woman and watch Droopy and Murky run in circles while trying to figure out what the feminazis want them to do or not do.

Since when a conservative woman is a woman?

#6  #4 exactly right. I don't see anything wrong with letting more than 9 people vote on abortion.

#4  Nothing stops state legislatures or Sen. Collin's to pass law implementing the tenets of Roe vs Wade. They won't do it because they know the ugly questions they'll face. Better to be cowards and rely upon an excuse that SCOTUS made us do it. They're very afraid of dealing with that.

#3  How about if the Justice supports a Scandinavian take on it? Good Euro-progressive take should be great no?

#2  I think a majority of people are ok with a right to abortion, but not an entitlement to get the taxpayer to pay for it.

#1  Which appears to indicate she will only support pro-abortion nominees. The typical progressive and democratic litmus test.
