#7  C'mon, you guys. Spend a little time(?) on Interstate 405 near LAX and you'll be begging for a tunnel.

Or a meteor strike.

#6  And if you think tunnels are susceptible to earthquakes, check out some of our bridges.

#4  Having used it a number of times my vote goes to the chunnel. An underwater explosion somewhere before it enters bedrock with a distracting accompaniment of riot/fire for cover at the Calais seaport end. Remote sensors, alarms and traffic monitoring generally preclude manual placement but sinking a LPG tanker would bypass these controls.

That displaces my former favorite, the Eisenhower tunnel on I-70 west of Denver. Unlikely to collapse from a blast it is certainly susceptible to a twofer. The first to block the flow, the second to create an inferno of the ensuing traffic jam.

An upcoming earthquake will take LA tunnels, and I don't care about NYC.

#3  One wonders about jihadi possibilities... But given that the subway in New York City remains untroubled, perhaps I am being overly sensitive.

#2  I don't think the paperwork to start the Big Dig was accomplished as quickly...

#1  Tunnels in earthquake prone country (and they're still mapping out faults). Isn't that like building on the side of a volcano?
