Rapper Jim Jones buys stake in Richmond indoor football team, invites Colin Kaepernick to play
2017-12-11
[Richmond.com] Rapper Jim Jones, best known for his single "We Fly High," has purchased a stake in the Richmond Roughriders indoor football team.

At a news conference at the Richmond Coliseum on Thursday, Jones invited former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick to join the Roughriders team for its coming season.

Kaepernick was the first to kneel during the playing of the national anthem to protest police brutality. He has not yet been signed by an NFL team in the 2017 season.

"He can come here and keep his skills sharp, set some records," said Jones. "Help put this team on the map."

Jones got his first exposure to the Roughriders and indoor football last year, when he performed at halftime as the team won the Arena Pro Football League title at the Richmond Coliseum.

"Last year, I got to perform here in the championship game, and the energy was just overwhelming," said Jones. "I bring a lot of things to the table here, but mostly my notoriety. Music, movies, television, film and videos.

"We have a big platform when it comes to hip-hop, and hip-hop is the leading moneymaker in media today."

Roughriders owner Gregg Fornario said the addition of Jones to the team will allow the Roughriders to build their brand.

"He enables us to introduce the hard-hitting, fast-paced game of arena football to the hip-hop culture," said Fornario. "He’s also going to help us brand the Richmond Roughriders name not just in the community but nationwide."

The Roughriders will begin their second season in March. Their first home game is March 31. They will play in the American Arena League.

The Roughriders also announced the signing of Florida State legend Marvin Jones as defensive coordinator, and former Marshall University quarterback Rakeem Cato will be added to the 2018 roster.

#2  Indoor football is totally genius - assuming that Americans are starved for football. But one of the excuses the NFL is shopping for declining attendance is the over-abundance of football games on TV.

Given that Kaepernick's behaviour is what drove fans away in the first place, featuring him is bad salesmanship.
