Joe 'Smart' and friend trapped in rat infested room on lawless island wrecked by Irma have been 'abandoned by the British Gov't' |
2017-09-11 |
[Telegraph] British couple have been hiding in a rat infested bathroom with no water for five days as the Caribbean island they were living on descends into lawlessness in the wake of Hurricane Irma, their family have said. Jos Smart, 26, and his girlfriend Julia Taylor, 30, say they have been abandoned by the British Government and are too afraid to leave the half destroyed hotel that they found refuge in amid reports of looting and violence. The Category 5 storm hit the island on Wednesday and it has since been placed under curfew to try and restore order. British Troops and police officers have been sent to help the British Virgin Islands (BVI), but families of those on St Maarten, which is Dutch and shares the island with the French St Martin to the north, say that because it is not a British territory their loved ones have been abandoned. Perhaps because the responsibility for rescuing people from Dutch territory lies with the Dutch? Well, Julia does appear to be quite a legitimate distraction from the weather. |

#9 The airports were destroyed in St. Martin, Tortola, and St. Thomas so the KY National Guard, with units that do not need to land, were rescuing people and transferring anyone with a passport to Puerto Rico. Jamaicans with passports but no US visas were trying to get off island and I think they decided to figure it out in PR. I don't think people realize the extent of devastation after a direct hit from a Cat 5 storm, with no communication or power on islands that must import everything, but these former colonies also had the prisons destroyed with about 150 prisoners running loose in the BVI. All homes and vegetation were destroyed, including the VG Yacht Harbor for mega yachts THE Aga Khan was fond of, & the mosque in Roadtown. 'Left Behind' in the Caribbean with machete wielding thugs is truly a terrifying thought. |

#7 Trump has a $14 million mansion (at least before the hurricane it was) on that island. I hope he hired a bunch of PMCs to protect it unless he has really good insurance on it. He's had it up for sale for quite awhile. |

#4 ...You know, something I remember from Hurricane Hugo was that the VI - ours and everybody else's - pretty much went full Mad Max afterwards, and that I made a promise to myself to never visit the place. Glad to see I made the right call. Mike |
