US airstrike kills several civilians in Afghanistan
2017-08-11
Several civilians have been killed in an US airstrike in eastern Afghanistan, local officials said Friday, the latest setback in efforts to bring peace to the war-torn country.
"On Thursday afternoon, the American forces bombarded a civilian private vehicle... when they were travelling inside the district," he told AFP.

"Unfortunately, in the airstrike we have casualties. Eleven people were killed and one wounded. All the victims, which included women and children, were civilians and they were from one family. Crowded civilian vehicle.

"The victims were beyond recognition, So how do we know they were civilians, and from one family? and they were placed inside the sacks and were buried late last night," he added.

One wonders how such a mistake could happen, since there is no mention of any active fighting (and resulting confusion) in the area: was the vehicle 'authorized' as a legitimate target by a Talibunny pretending to be an Afghan official?

#4  Were they civilians before the strike? Or just after?

#3  Airstrikes on Germany and Japan killed a lot of civilians as well. Turned two countries with militaristic cultures into two of the least militaristic.

The Romans and Mongols had methods of pacifying areas that seemed to work very well (for varying definitions of the term "well") --- not that I'm advocating them, just to be clear.
