  • Target 'was Etihad flight to Abu Dhabi with 500 passengers and crew on board'

  • The alleged plot is believed to involve crude device disguised as a meat grinder

  • Foreign intelligence intercepted communication from Syria, prompting raids

  • Khaled Khayat's brother is believed to be a senior Islamic State figure while the other two men are related to Ahmed Merhi, who travelled to Syria in 2014 to fight for the jihadist group

  • Khayat's other son studied aviation management and mixes with pilots and airline workers
The Merhi family, now on their third generation in Australia, has a tendency toward jihad, according to the Daily Telegraph.
