Manchester 'explosions': Police warn people to stay away from arena after loud bangs heard at Ariana Grande concert
2017-05-22
[Independent] Nineteen people have been killed and at least 50 people have been injured following an kaboom at Manchester Arena which is being treated as a terrorist incident.

Footage shows thousands of panicked young people fleeing the arena in panic after an kaboom went off at around 10.40pm.

Eyewitnesses said the kaboom sounds were heard outside the auditorium after the artist had finished her show and left the stage, with people claiming on social media they believed the bangs were a bomb.

One fan leaving the concert described how the loud bangs resonated as fans were leaving the venue, which has a capacity of 21,000. It is not known how many people were attending the concert, but the majority of the American pop star's fans are young people in their teens and twenties.

One eyewitness named Andy who had been at the concert with his wife and daughters told the BBC he had seen many people lying on the ground injured as he desperately searched for his family.

"Whoever's done it has done it on a kids' concert," he said, adding that the whole building had shook from the force of the kaboom.

Another eyewitness said he was thrown "30 feet in the air" by the force of the kaboom.

Emergency services are said to be in attendance at the venue close to Manchester Victoria station with police helicopters reported to be circling overhead.

Police have warned people to stay away from the arena while investigations take place and put out a a statement confimring the number of fatalities shortly after 1am.

Police confirmed a bomb disposal squad carried out a controlled kaboom of a suspect device around 1am.

#9  NBC reporting law enforcement officials say at least 20 dead and hundreds have been injured.

But the hundreds injured claim is being challenged on Twitter, and the police reports continue to say 19 dead and at least 50 wounded -- though that may mean seriously enough wounded to be taken to hospital rather than slapped with a bandaid and sent home. Still, given the size of the crowd and the average age of the audience, and the supposition of a suicide bomber plus a second device, it's fairly miraculous it wasn't a very great deal worse. Thank you all for being on top of this.

I've set it as today's headline, late in the day though it is.
