2017-02-23
[SCMP] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
’s army is lifting a historic ban on female officers wearing the Islamic headscarf in the officially secular country, the state-run Anadolu news agency said on Wednesday.

The move, ordered by the defence ministry, applies to female officers working in the general staff and command headquarters and branches, it said. Women may wear the headscarf underneath their cap or beret so long as it is the same colour as their uniform and does not cover their faces.

The reform will come into force once it is published in the official gazette. It was not immediately clear if it applied to women on combat missions. It will also apply to female cadets.

The ruling Islamic-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP) co-founded by President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First

has long pressed for the removal of restrictions on women wearing the headscarf.

#5  Tell Putin that he can have most of the Black Sea if he gets the Iranians to get rid of the Turks and the Saudis and he gets rid of the Iranians. Leave Egypt the strongest military in the Muzzie world and see what that leaves.

#4  yep alan c erdogan does want the caliphate back. that's why he supports islamic state. he thinks he can co-opt their caliphate and fold it into his own.

basically it's the muslim brotherhood. they formed after the last caliphate ruled by the ottomans ended.

their goal was always to bring it back. erdogan is muslim brotherhood

#2  this is a bigger deal than it would otherwise seem in any country other than turkey

in turkey it's culturally a huge advertisement to islamists that "we are no longer secular"

the army was the protector of turkish secularism. Erdogan is merging islam with the organs of the state
