| Jahangir first ‘New JMB leader’ arrested alive |

| [Dhaka Tribune] Jahangir Alam, more commonly known as Rajib Gandhi among militants, is the first New JMB leader that police have arrested alive who has direct connection with Gulshan terror attack. Officials of the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crimes (CTTC) unit of police believe that this arrest is pivotal for terror investigations as Jahangir can provide information that could tie up many loose ends. “Gandhi is the first New JMB leader arrested alive who was involved in the planning of Gulshan attack. This development will help us make significant progress in the case,” said Additional Commissioner Monirul Islam, chief of CTTC. Furthermore, Jahangir’s arrest was essential for the law enforcers to stop further stray attacks, he told reporters yesterday morning. Starting off as a cook for Abdul Awal, son-in-law of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) chief Shayakh Abdur Rahman, Jahangir went on to join New JMB and become a trusted deputy of Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury, the group’s coordinator who also orchestrated Gulshan attack. “So we expect him to provide crucial and brand new information on both factions as well,” said a CTTC source. A CTTC team arrested Jahangir at Elenga bus stand in Tangail on late Friday night. Investigators believe he was one of the key planners of the terror attack on Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan, Dhaka on July 1 last year. Twenty-three people, including 17 foreigners and two police officers, were killed in the attack. International terrorist group Islamic State later claimed responsibility for the attack. |
