Teenage Refugees Selling Sex On Athens Streets |
2016-12-03 |
[Tolo News] Desperate young refugees have been forced into the murky underworld of drugs and prostitution in an attempt to survive on the streets of Athens, in Greece. In a CNN documentary, young men are seen congregating at Victoria Square, in central Athens, in small groups, where they ply their trade. Many of them are teenagers ‐ unaccompanied minors. According to a social worker, Tassos Smetopoulos, they come here for money so they can pay human traffickers to get them to central Europe. One teenager, interviewed by CNN, is Ali (not his real name). He is 17 years old and is from Afghanistan. He said he came to Europe hoping to get an education and to eventually bring his mother to join him. But now Ali is dependent on drugs and on the money from clients. Like many others, Ali visits a nearby park regularly where deals are made with men. Ali said some of the older men offer to take boys to a local disco or to their home. "Some will take you home, give you clothes and anything you like," he says. "They will treat you like their husband, their boyfriend, they will give you €200, €300, €400 ($212, $318, $425). "It's very hard. How can a person be with another man like that? Those men are sick. No matter how often I do it, it doesn't get easier," Ali said. CNN reported that the seeming rise in unaccompanied minors prostituting themselves comes after a "one-for-one" deal brokered between the EU and ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire.... in March. |
