Homs – Russian warplanes launched on Thursday several airstrikes on ISIS positions in Syria’s central governorate of Homs, killing and wounding a number of militants. The airstrikes targeted strongholds of the Islamic State’s (ISIS) militants south of the Sha’er Gas Field in the countryside of Homs.
“At least seven ISIS militants were killed and more than a dozen wounded in the Russian air raids on Thursday,” local media activist Amro al-Hussein told ARA News, citing an ISIS source.
Russian fighter jets also targeted ISIS headquarters in the al-Sukhna town and in the vicinity of Huwesis District in eastern Homs, destroying several ISIS machine guns and armoured vehicles.
This comes just three days after an attempt by ISIS fighters to storm a Syrian army base in Huwesis in eastern Homs Governorate. ISIS jihadists softened the fortified base with a protracted bombardment before attempting to infiltrate through the periphery. More than 35 Syrian Army soldiers were reportedly killed and dozens more were wounded, local sources told ARA News.
ISIS has recently brought reinforcements to the eastern countryside of Homs in a bid to protect the Sha’er Gas Field and its remaining positions in the governorate.
