IDF official: Gaza tunnel-stopper only months from completion |
2016-09-26 |
[IsraelTimes] A senior military official says a massive underground barrier being built along the Gaza border to defend against Hamas tunnels should be completed in a matter of months. The Southern Command official says the structure will include a wall deep below the ground as well as flooding parts of the roughly 60-kilometer (40-mile) border. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity under military briefing regulations, says the goal is to turn Hamas’s underground network into a “death trap.” During the 2014 war, Hamas fighters managed on several occasions to make their way into Israel through a tunnel network. |

#8 Seems like a line of heavy airborne cratering ordinance would bring down tunnels easier than flooding and wall building. |

#7 I'm not familiar with the geology of the area, but sand or loose material would liquify with the addition of water under high pressure. I think most of what we have heard to date about the anti-tunnel system is mis-information. |

#3 its really hard to do work underground rapidly 'in a matter of months' may be, say, 20 months |

#1 High pressure injection of water near tunnels would indeed make them a death trap. |
