| Russia appoints new commander to Southern Military District |

| A senior Russian commander has been appointed as commander of Russian ground forces in Syria to its Southern Military District, according to Russian language news sources. Colonel-General Aleksandr Dvornikov was appointed acting commander of Russian Southern Military District July 1st before his permanent appointment as military district commander. General Dvornikov replaced Colonel-General Aleksandr Galkin. Dvornikov was formerly commander of Russian ground forces in Syria starting in September, 2015. The date is significant as it is the start of Russian military intervention in Syria. |
