After Unlocking iPhone On Its Own, Government Drops Effort To Compel Apple's Help
2016-03-29
Last week, it was reported that the FBI had figured out how to unlock the iPhone belonging to one of the shooters who killed 14 people in San Bernardino, CA, on Dec. 2, 2015. Now, it’s official, as the government has dropped its attempt to compel Apple to aid the FBI in bypassing the device’s security -- but this is just the first of likely many fights over this issue.

This morning, the Department of Justice filed a status report [PDF] with the U.S. District Court that had first ordered Apple to assist the FBI, disclosing that the agency’s efforts to unlock the iPhone belonging to Syed Farook had been fruitful.
US gets info, Apple maintains market share. Win/win, right?

#5  Nguard has the truth of it.

FBI has been lying from the start. This was all about using a terrorism case to get a court to force Apple to do the FBI's work for them. With that precedent set, 'law enforcement' would have routinely used it to get phones unlocked in child support and parking ticket cases. When the case started going against them, the FBI ran like frightened girls.

#2  You would think cracking an iPhone would be child's play for our techno hotshots at the FBI, CIA and NSA.

Really? had to ask Apple for help? That's embarrassing.

#1  Likely story. A convenient excuse to get out of a losing test case. As they say, discovery is a cast iron B!tC#, and the federal judges are getting less impressed by the magic "National Security" invocation.
