Lebanon Marred with Protests, Clashes as Leaders Held Second Round of Dialogue

[ALMANAR.LB] Riot police have clashed with protesters in Beirut as a meeting by Lebanese leaders who gathered for the second session of national dialogue was being held in an attempt to reach common ground to end the presidential stalemate.

Protesters from the "You Stink" citizens' group said that at least 25 people were detained and several others were maimed on Wednesday afternoon. Anti-government demonstrators declared open-ended sit-in in Riad al-Solh until all protesters released. You Stink has been protesting against government corruption and political dysfunction.

At least 150 protesters gathered in Beirut's downtown area, where the second round of national dialogue was taking place in a week, several hundred security personnel were also deployed.

"The conferees discussed means to reach a breakthrough in the issue of the presidential election and other topics," said an official statement issued after the session.

"They stressed their support for the government in the implementation of the decisions that were taken to address the vital issues and it was decided to hold the next session on Tuesday, September 22 at 12:00 pm," it added.

Leb has witnessed dozens of protests in the past two months over several issues atop of which was the crisis of waste disposal which hadn't been solved yet.
