2015-08-20
[Wash Times] RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. - The Riviera Beach City Council will vote Wednesday on a proposed street name change from Old Dixie Highway to Barack Obama Highway.

"Each member will vote Yay or Nay to rid this city of a street name that still invokes memories of racism and slavery in the Old South" says Mayor Thomas Masters.

The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in City Hall Chambers at 600 W. Blue Heron Boulevard in Riviera Beach.

#13  How is this different from changing the name of St. Petersburg to Leningrad?

#12  Ooooh ooooh! Can the lines be red?

#11  It always causes a lot of confusion and inconvenience when the name of any highway, road, street or any other type of public thoroughfare is changed for whatever reason. Confusion and inconvenience are liable to cause lost revenue. Just plain stupid.

According to Wikipedia the origins of the name Dixie remain obscure. Three possible origins are given and only one of them has any connection to slavery.

#9  King deserves his highway and recognition. What has Obama done for race relations? Drove it back a hundred years!

#8  Interstate 65 is named "Martin Luther King Highway" it's still I-65, and all-ways will be.

No matter how many blacks force their name on it,

#6  Those who ignore history are destined to repeat it. That ought to be fun...

#5  I wonder how long it will be before they try to rename US Route 1 in Virginia. Right now it is Jefferson Davis Highway.

Maybe the SJWS should just expel all the old Confederate states.

By the way, I am a Yankee, born and bred, but I am getting sick and tired of all this PC crap of trying to purge any memory of slavery.

#3  ...from Old Dixie Highway to Barack Obama Highway.

Seems appropriate. Narrow, shabby, unkempt, bumpy road that might embarrass any but the poorer counties in possession of such a venue. I'm sure it was cutting edge of transportation 80 years ago, but using the term 'Highway' is way beyond its ranking today.

#2  I doubt that the new street signs would last very long.

#1  It will always be the Old Dixie Highway whatever they name it to satisfy today's PC requirements. Leave it as is--changing it will not stand for anything. More lefty feel-good B.S.
