The strong winds whipping across the kingdom's desert plains caused massive sand storms, forcing changes in the country's air traffic patterns. The storm prevented flights from landing at Amman International Airport, sending two Royal Jordanian flights to land at Israel's Ben Gurion International Airport. Flights operated by other Arab carriers, which cannot land in Israel, were diverted to Aqaba. The heavy heat wave hitting the region has spurred calls for a national holiday in Jordan. Concurrently, several areas in the country reportedly experienced rain. | ||

| #2 The captain of a Syrian airliner gets on his radio and declares an emergency: "Mayday, this is Syrian Air, Flight 174, we have lost an engine and need to land at any airport in the Mideast OTHER than Israel." No answer. A short while later he announces, "Mayday, mayday, this is Syrian Air, Flight 174 again. We have now lost TWO engines and ask permission to land at any airport in the mid-east OTHER than Israel." Still no answer from anyone. A while later the pilot calls out, "Mayday, mayday, mayday! This is Syrian Air, Flight 174. We are desperately in need of help. We are losing another engine and need permission to land at any airport in the mid-east OTHER than Israel!" Still no answer from anyone. Finally, the Captain calls, "Help! This is Syrian Airliner, flight 174, we have only one engine left and it is rapidly failing! Unless we can land we are going to crash. We need permission to land at ANY airport in the mid-east, INCLUDING Israel!" Shortly thereafter, a voice is heard in the Syrian airplane cockpit: "This is Ben Gurion air traffic control calling Syrian Air, flight 174. We hear you have a problem." "Allah bless you," replies the Syrian pilot. "What should we do?" Air traffic control responded, "Repeat after me: Yisgadal, v'yisgadash . . . ." |
