US, Egypt resume formal security talks with Kerry visit
2015-08-03
[Ynet] Despite persistent human rights
...which often include carefully measured allowances of freedom at the convenience of the state...
concerns, the United States on Sunday resumed formal security talks with Egypt that were last held six years ago and kept on hiatus until now amid the political unrest that swept the country in the wake of the Arab Spring.

Two days after the US delivered eight F-16 warplanes to Egypt as part of a military support package that the B.O. regime is boosting to help Egypt counter an increasing terrorist threat, Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
restarted the so-called "strategic dialogue" with Egyptian officials in Cairo. The dialogue was last held in 2009 and did not occur in subsequent years due to the Arab Spring and turmoil following the ouster of Egypt's authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak

in 2011.

Kerry said the administration was committed to working with Egypt to enhance its military capabilities as it confronts growing threats from holy warriors, particularly in the Sinai Peninsula. That aid had been on hold until earlier this year due to human rights and democracy concerns in the wake of the military overthrow of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in 2013.

US welcomes Sisi’s economic efforts, supports Egypt's security: Kerry

[AlAhram] The meetings were scheduled to take place over two days but the ‎dialogue has been shortened to just one day due to last minute changes.

Some of the meetings that were supposed to take place between the US delegation and representatives ‎of the Egyptian private sector in the Egyptian-US Chamber of Commerce were canceled accordingly. ‎‎

"Meetings will be held between businessmen from both sides, but not as part of the official dialogue," ‎an official source told Ahram Online.‎

Observers attributed this sudden change to the fact that the dialogue is now focusing more on regional issues rather than a dialogue to strengthen relations between the two states.

The "strategic ‎relations" between the two countries are presently related to the regional political issues, which are a priority for the US administration's agenda.

Well, they get back murderers being released from GTMO if you must know.

#4  All part of the "Let's Bribe Everyone" tour. The Sauds get anti-missile missiles, the Turks get to bomb the Kurds, the Israelis get an American traitor, and the Jordanians get some used helicopters.

No word an what the Bahrainis, Kuwaitis, Qataris and the various and sundry Emirates get - yet.

#3   IIRC isn't there some Egyptian military involvement in Yemen funded by the Saudis?

There is some, yes. But Egypt is trying awfully hard not to be cannon fodder for that particular land war in Asia, as I understand it. Separately, this is an opportunity for President Obama's people to shove a bit of daylight between Egypt and Israel, which have become awfully cozy in light of shared local enemies.
