2015-06-03
[Tolo News] A group of unknown gunnies on Monday night killed nine aid agency workers from the Czech Republic's People in Need organization - among them a woman - in northern Balkh province, local officials said.

Meanwhile in a statement, President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
strongly condemned killing of aid workers and called the perpetrators "enemies of progress and development in Afghanistan."

Calling it a "coward act," Ghani has ordered the interior ministry to launch investigations and arrest the perpetrators.

The incident took place in Zare district after a number of Lions of Islam attacked the aid agency's compound, a front man for Provincial Governor, Ahmad Muneer Farhad said.

"First they rubbed out two security guards of the aid agency. After that they rubbed out nine employees among them a woman," he said.

According to officials, the Czech agency works with farmers in the province and helps provide them with seed.
BBC adds:
The charity - People in Need (PIN) - said the victims were "killed in their beds while they were sleeping".

PIN said it had suspended all of its work in Afghanistan and was adopting measures to strengthen the security of its employees in the country. The charity has been working in Afghanistan since 2002, delivering aid to remote communities in the east and north of the country.

Tuesday's attack comes just weeks after 14 people were killed in a Taliban attack on a guesthouse popular with international aid workers in the capital, Kabul.
