Rand Paul in Chicago: Crime 'not a racial thing, it is a spiritual problem'
2015-06-02
[Chicago Tribune] Kentucky U.S. Sen. Rand Paul brought his presidential campaign to Chicago on Wednesday, appealing to African-Americans on the South Side, entrepreneurs downtown and Republicans in the suburbs..

On a stage set up on a blacktop parking lot in front of an American flag mural at 66th Street and South King Drive, Paul continued a unique approach for GOP White House contenders -- making an appeal to African-Americans who tend to favor Democrats.

Paul opened his speech by referring to the "black lives matter" refrain used by protesters after the controversial deaths of African-American men at the hands of police. Paul said the phrase reminds him of the deaths of Eric Garner, who was choked to death by officers in New York, and Freddie Gray, who was fatally injured in police custody in Baltimore. But Paul said the phrase also has meaning in Chicago.

"When I hear people say, 'Black lives matter,' I think of Jacele Johnson, who is 4 years old and got shot this weekend just a few blocks from here," Paul said of the Englewood girl who doctors say is swiftly recovering after being shot on the left side of her head Friday night outside a family gathering. "You may be saying to yourself, 'Why is this white guy saying black lives matter, what does he know about crime in my neighborhood?' Well, I've got crime in my neighborhood too. ... We've got some kind of thing going on in our country, and we need to come to grips with it."

Paul then talked about a horrific 2011 case in his home state. "In my little town in Kentucky, a white woman cut a baby out of another white woman.

#10  Ditto on #9. I like idea men/wymn, outside the box thinkers. Great to have a beer with, inspire dialogue, a serious contemplative moment, a good laugh. President of the United States.... mebe not.

A little longer on the braai, no dripping blood, perhaps additional seasoning.

#9  Iblis, I can't vote for Paul now, he's said too many stupid things. However, I agree I'd take 20 Rand Pauls to 1 John McCain. I like Rand out there injecting thought provoking comments and making folks think about things, I just don't want him President.

#8  Calling cultural issues race issues has been the game for some time. Easier to call someone a racist than right. The real problem with black culture is they vilify anyone that tries to escape through hard work and education. It's fine if you are super-talented though, so everyone bets it all against the odds. Then when that fails what have you got?

#7  Hell, one John McCain is bad enough. You don't need 20.

#6  I've been noticing lots of people piling on to Paul. Well, nuts to them. What Paul did was epic. He's a hero. He might otherwise be flawed, but who cares? I'd take 1 Rand Paul over 20 John McCains.

#5  In one sense, all crime is a spiritual problem but I don't think you want to redefine the reasons for crime in this way--a person's lack of morality is not an excuse for their crime. They broke the law. I can see criminal defense attorneys jumping on this defense. Next, they will be asking the churches to intervene in the criminal justice system. That sounds a little too much like either a wrist slap or in the other extreme, Sharia Law.

#4  Government can't provide you salvation, government can't save you. … Ultimately, salvation is something you accept yourselves.

Call it racial, cultural, or spiritual…whatever. Paul maybe off on somethings but he’s spot on this one. Government dependence is at the root of much of the poverty in America – and by extension crime. And it’s a pretty good counter message to…Hi, I’m Hillary Clinton…vote for me and I will solve all your income inequality problems.

#3  I'll go with cultural as well DV. I'll also go with anyone other than Rand Paul.

#1  I would say it is more of a cultural problem. There is a reason that poverty is passed from one generation to another in this country and it isn't because of lack of opportunity.
