Group pushing to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 selects Harriet Tubman as their candidate
2015-05-13
[DAILYMAIL.CO.UK]
  • The group Women on 20s says 600,000 voters chose the Maryland-born escaped slave and Underground Railroad conductor to appear on a $20
  • Tubman beat out Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt and Wilma Mankiller, the first female chief of the Cherokee Nation, in the final round of voting
  • Now the group intends to petition President Obama to encourage the treasury to make the first such change since 1929
Somebody 'splain to me why anyone is required to pay any attention to these people.

#31  @#21 I just visited Harpers Ferry a few weeks ago for the first time. The answer is Robert E Lee.

#27  "I don't understand. These new $20s with Rev. Jackson's picture keep curling up into straws."

#26  A lot of Native Americans have an understandable if misguided issue with Andrew Jackson. I say put Ronald Reagan on the Twenty he earned it by winning the Cold War.

#25  You don't want to use Rst. Jesse Jackson - people will tend to use it as buttwipe!

#24  "How dare you monetize a African American!"

#23  Know without looking but unfair advantage Kansas history. I'll hold.

#22  So they decide to put out a 'Tubman' note, but there's too many Jacksons in circulation worldwide. So they decide to make up a new denomination, say the $15 dollar bill. As a further stroke of genius, they want to make it half size to cut down on production costs. That also means no change machine in the world will take it.
So when you go down to the post office to get a $35 dollar postage stamp, you'll get a 'Tubman' in change from your fifty.

#21  Rantburg University trivia question: Who was the officer in charge of the 'take down' of abolitionist John Brown at the Harper's Ferry Arsenal?

CLUE: This U.S. Army Major later became the president of Washington & Lee University and is buried in the campus chapel there today.

#20  She did help John Brown, though.

#16  I wasn't aware that there was anything wrong with the 20 dollar bill but, since there apparently is, put Palin on it...and watch the heads explode!

#15  All very tiring and divisive. We don't have a 'Big Five' per se, but we could easily switch to political party and animal themes. How about it ?
Posted by: Besoeker   2015-05-13 14:06

#14  I nominate Jesse Jackson.

At least they won't have to change the script, Just the portrait.

Now I dare you not to laugh

#13  IIRC it could have been close, but a detachment of British crossed the river and were put so far off target it effectively took them out of the fight. It was then a British push towards the center where many veterans of the war vs. Napoleon met their fate.

These were crack troops who didn't run, but were used to European battlefields and were already exhausted by marching through swampy land and various sleep deprivation harassments.

A goodly portion of the American forces were volunteers and irregulars. Legit win.

#11  I guess piecing together a French/Spanish/American/Indian/Free Black army and then leading them to victory over crack British forces and saving the City of New Orleans doesn't get much respect these days. IIRC, Jackson's army was responsible for the most lop-sided American victory on U.S. Soil.

#10  I suggest that Democratic senator who was a KKK Great Dragon and shared bench with Obama.
