Baltimore riot: State of emergency declared, 15 police injured after violence following Freddie Gray funeral
2015-04-28
[ABC.NET.AU] A state of emergency has been declared in the US city of Baltimore as protesters clash with police after the funeral of a 25-year-old black man who died a week ago from a spinal injury suffered in police custody.

The riots broke out just a few blocks from the site of Freddie Gray's funeral and then spread through other parts of the city.

At least 15 coppers were maimed, a police front man said, as authorities in riot gear cordoned off streets.

Hundreds of rioters looted businesses and set buildings on fire.

Television images showed a mob of rioters jumping on the top of a police car, after teenaged crowds ignored calls to disperse and clashed with a line of hundreds of police.

Rioters also cut a fire department hose while firefighters fought a fire at a pharmacy looted earlier, Baltimore police said.

Maryland governor Larry Hogan declared state of emergency and has activated the state's national guard over the violence, his office said.

A city-wide curfew has been put in place between 10:00pm and 5:00am for one week starting on Tuesday, Baltimore mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said.

"Too many people have spent generations building up this city for it to be destroyed by thugs," she told a presser.

Mr Gray's death reignited a public outcry over police treatment of African Americans that flared last year after the killings of unarmed black men in Ferguson, Missouri, New York City and elsewhere.

#13  Her "character" is obviously content-less, rj.

#12  Baltimore mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has complete failed by every measure. Like Mayor Nagin and Mayor Marion Barry she'll probably have a long political career ahead of her because of the color of her skin rather than the content of her character.

#11  Funny how the governor gave them a little room to vent and they escallated. Perhaps she doesn't really understand her constituants at all.

There should be a law about crossing state lines to join a riot. It is one thing for locals to riot and burn their own crap but very much another for others to join in and escallate the problem. I'd like to see some serious jail time for the border-crossing rioters.

#9  The problem with that kind of redistribution is that nothing is left when they are done deciding who gets what. And no electricity to run whatever got redistributed.

#8  ...cause it takes the (middle man) politician out of the process of redistribution? Think of the job loss there.

#6  They don't want jobs, they want anarchy.

#5  Not enough jobs hell. They just don't want a job that they think is below them. I went from working on million + homes to detailing cars, so if you want one you can find it.

#4  ...can't provide much in the way of jobs when 10 million (and growing) low skill illegals pour across the border [in care of Donk policies]. Their votes count more than your votes, suckers. If you didn't notice, google ethnic cleansing Compton.

#3  Watched coverage on Breibart.

Saw the Govenor spout the usual leftist rubbish, along the lines of 'This is happening because we haven't provided enough jobs and government services'.

#2  Watching the mayor of Baltimore speak during last evenings press conference didn't exactly inspire a great deal of confidence. Those who spoke alongside her were even less inspiring.
