Special Forces Told Save '€˜Last Bullet For Yourself' Rather Than Become Prisoner Of ISIS
2015-02-18
The source said: '€œAs a member of the SAS you know that you are going to be executed by the enemy if you're captured. €œThat'€™s why we carry pistols. It'€™s our secondary weapon. But it also allows us the choice of topping ourselves when all hope has gone. Better that than giving away where your mates are operating.'

#4  During the Iraq war, there were very few soldiers or Marines captured. I'm pretty sure that this sort thing was going on there as well.

#2  This tradition goes back a long way:

From "The Young British Soldier" by Rudyard Kilping:

" When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,

And the women come out to cut up what remains,

Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains

An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
So-oldier _of_ the Queen!"

#1  In those dark days right after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, my air force uncle found himself guarding a foxhole with his buddy, since their entire squadron's planes had been destroyed on the ground. They had been reading the newspapers for years & knew of the Empire's treatment of prisoners. Between the two of them, they each agreed to save a bullet for the other guy, if it came to that.
