Boehner Says He'd Allow Homeland Security Shutdown
2015-02-17
[NYTIMES] The House speaker, John It is not pronounced 'Boner!' Boehner
... the occasionally weepy leader of House Republicans...
, said Sunday that he was "certainly" prepared to allow funding for the Department of Homeland Security to lapse, raising the possibility that one of the government's largest and most vital agencies could be shut down at the end of the month.
Might we simply revert to the law enforcement agencies on hand prior to the establishment of the so-called Homeland Security ?
Coming just two months after Republicans gained full control of Congress, a shutdown would be a major political problem as the party tries to honor a vow to govern responsibly and cooperatively.

It would contradict a pledge from Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, who said the day after his party won decisively at the polls in November, "There will be no government shutdowns." And it would exacerbate a rift that has been growing between Republicans in the House and the Senate.

"The House has done its job; we've spoken," Mr. Boehner said on "Fox News Sunday." "If the Senate doesn't like it, they'll have to produce something that fits their institution."

#19  DHS is yet more evidence we need a "sunset" law amended into the Constitution.

#17  The last shut down they called all of DHS essential, and they worked anyway.

#16  Well, I meant shut down DHS.

#15  Now the airports can hire private security firms to replace the TSA. State, county/parish Sheriffs and local police will have to police the cities and borders.

The military has been pulled from the battlefield anyway.

We will replace the CIA with people monitoring reports from people on the ground from around the world.

Shut down the TSA.

#14  TSA

Thousands standing around.

#13   Organization chart for DHS in case anyone wondered. There are 240,000 employees in DHS. TSA falls under this umbrella.

#12  Hate to support Boehner but it's not his job to run the Senate. The House passed the bill, it's now up to the Senate. If you want "movement" talk to Reid and McConnell.

#11  They don't need 2/3rds majority to shutdown homeland security. If they fail to fund a spending bill it shuts down, at least partially. From the Washington Post:

"Most security workers would be deemed essential in a DHS shutdown and report to the border or to airports, but they would go without pay, while tens of thousands of administrative-level workers would be furloughed."

#10  Same game different party. Bonner needs to grow up and stop playing the same plays as the democrats. We voted the republican party in off ice because we are tired of dingy and his antics. Now bonner is doing the same crap. disappointing to say the least.

#8  DHS was one of those mistakes that often occurs in Washington. It just added to the debt, bureaucracy, and inefficiency.

#7  ...the possibility that one of the government's largest and most vital agencies could be shut down at the end of the month.

Was it so vital that it existed in 1960, 1970? How did the republic exist without such a vital agency for two hundred years?

#6  The Pubs could pass legislation but it would probably be vetoed by the ONE. Such as veto could be over-ridden by a 2/3 vote in both Houses. I doubt that would happen as the Pubs don't have the votes. The country needs a new POTUS who is a Pub and both Houses. The Pubs can fight a delaying action or hope the Courts will get involved in their favor but they really need the Presidency in 2016. It's a long, long year and a half.

#5  He would only say that if he new it was never going to be shut down. Drama continues and like any play we all know how this ends: RINOs cave and GIVERnment grows.

#4  Shut it down, deprecate, integrate and reinstate.

#3  Someone must have mailed Boehner some balls. Now if we could get that chinless wonder in the Senate to play hardball like Reid did, they could pass some legislation.
