Analysis: Hizbullah Faces Hard Choices Between Fighting Israel, Sunnis |
2015-02-04 |
[AnNahar] Hizbullah ... Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistanceand purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory... 's ambitions are spreading far beyond its Leb home as the Shiite movement appears increasingly bent on taking on Sunni foes across the Middle East. It has sent thousands of its fighters into Syria and senior military advisers to Iraq, helped Iranian catspaws rise to power in Yemen and threatened Bahrain over its abuse of the Shiite majority. But the regional aspirations also are taking a heavy toll and threatening to undermine Hizbullah's support at home. The group has suffered significant casualties, there is talk of becoming overstretched, and judging by the events of recent days, even a vague sense that the appetite for fighting the Israelis is waning. |

#7 The Israeli behavior shows this is not true. Even fighting a war, Heezbollah has deterrence against Israel. |

#6 I think they hope that if they attack Israel the Sunni's will back off or lose support, at least for awhile. |

#5 What's so hard about this choice: if you won't fight Sunnis, they'll squash you; if you will fight Israel, Israel will squash you. |

#2 Why not fight them both? It'd be a "floor wax and a dessert topping" opportunity. |

#1 Attacking the Israelis is for propaganda. Fighting the Sunnis is for survival. |
