#6  "jarhead" is a mild perjorative, used in reference to the Marine high-and-tight haircut.

The proper, familiar, in-tribe term is "devil dog." Being a "squid" myself, I generally prefer using the honorific "Marine."

#5  Hyphenating it emphasizes that jarness of the thing. I've never been sure what that actually means, but clearly it does... especially to the Air Force and Shipman's father. ;-)
