Al-Sadr calls for control over militias |

[ARABNEWS] Senior Iraqi Shiite holy man Moqtada Al-Sadr says the country must rein in the powerful Shiite militias battling the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... bad boy group and have them coordinate more directly with the country's official armed forces. Speaking at a presser Monday with Iraqi Defense Minister Khalid Al-Obeidi, Al-Sadr said his followers are now "at the disposal of the army," adding he will work "to supplement militias and other gangs with the army." A number of militias, including Al-Sadr's "Peace Brigades," answered calls last summer to fight alongside Iraq's beleaguered military, which virtually crumbled in the face of the bad boy onslaught. Many of those Shiite militias answer to different leaders, have been difficult to control and are accused of brutal tactics and discrimination against Sunnis. |
