59 arrested siege suspects may be freed |
2014-11-28 |
Government lawyers asked a regional court in Metro Manila to drop 59 suspects from the rebellion complaint filed in connection with the bloody siege launched by the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in Zamboanga City in 2013. In their petition, the prosecutors said that the 59 were mistakenly identified as "rogue elements" of the MNLF that launched the siege. "No evidence linking them to the bloody two-week siege was found," the prosecutors said, citing findings of a Department of Justice report that the 59 suspects were arrested after being were caught in the crossfire during heavy fighting between Philippine security forces and the MNLF militants. |
