Student wearing military type jacket prompts school lockdown
2014-09-18
A student walking in the hall wearing a green military-style jacket prompted a lockdown at a Southington (Connecticut) school on Tuesday. John F. Kennedy Middle School on South Main Street in the Plantsville section of Southington was put in lockdown around 11 a.m.

Superintendent of Schools Tim Connellan told Eyewitness News that a student was walking in a hallway, while others were in class, which alarmed a staff member. Connellan said the staff member described the student as wearing a military style jacket, and notified the school office.

All students were told to return to their classrooms while the school was placed in lockdown, which is "part of the standard operating procedure." The staffer alerted school leaders and they called police. Officers searched the John F. Kennedy Middle School and its surrounding grounds, but police said the initial search "revealed nothing of a suspicious nature."

#5  Many parents elect to put their kids in a religious-based school such as Catholic, Christian, Jewish, 7th Day Adventist, etc. or they home school. Discipline, PC, and teacher's unions are not such a problem. Kids that come out of these schools or a home schooling experience tend to do O.K.--usually better than O.K. It can be done.

#4  Once you get your head around the idea that 'boys are just maladjusted girls' that is indoctrinated in the (*cough*) College of Education on campuses across the country, you'd begin to understand the mindset of the lemmings that run our school systems. Its basically one big sorority in the first tier education system. The view of the world is thus skewed significantly. Surprise. [notice the lack of calls for 'sensitivity training' in these cases?]

#3  My goodness this caused a flashback.

Shortly after Columbine my son caused a similar incident in 7th grade. He always wore a green coat which his aunt bought for him in an Army Navy Marine Surplus store (in P'town).

Friends of his asked if he was carrying a machine gun so he opened the coat to show that he wasn't and a teacher who was standing there had a conniption fit. My wife was called to school etc. etc. The ass't. principal got well and truly reamed by my wife for being a jerk 8^). My son is 28 now, married, and hasn't killed anyone yet.

The moral of the story is that there have been cowardly assholes at schools for years.

#2  "No discipline is expected to be taken against the student in question or staffer"
WOW, what an emergency plan they've got. They've evidently planned to go wacko about the wrong thing at random, it's part of the plan.
It reminds me of what was described as the Houston PD's top brass emergency management plan:
"When in danger, when in doubt,
run in circles, scream and shout."

#1  I'm really surprised these people can walk around in public without getting the vapors.
