MASSIVE PALESTINIAN SNEAK ATTACK Against Jewish State Planned For 12 Years
2014-07-31
[GatewayPundit] Hamas planned to use the tunnels it dug from Gaza to Israel to execute a massive attack on southern Israel, an Israeli newspaper reported, citing unnamed Israeli security sources.

Under the plan detailed Friday by the Hebrew-language Maariv daily, Hamas planned to send terrorists through the more than 30 tunnels uncovered by Israeli troops and into six southern Israeli communities on Rosh Hashanah in September of this year.

The plan was to kill and kidnap as many Israelis as possible, according to the report.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly told the security Cabinet about the discovered plot during late last week.
They were planning on flooding the zone. Mr. Netanyahu is seriously correct in insisting upon the destruction of the tunnels.

Good analysis. My only slight point of departure is that both Obama and Kerry are ciphers and nitwits.

#13  My guess is that the offensive start when it did because of the PA-Hamas reconciliation talks. They had agreed to stop murdering each other, recall, and form a single oppressive govt. That sort of thing didn't go over with one faction or the other, probably Islamic Jihad. They were the ones who started with the rocketry if I recall correctly. They usually play the loose cannon when Hamas is trying to appear reasonable. Hamas couldn't control it because the order came from either Teheran or Beirut.

The order probably said "Just keep shooting until they do something," thinking the result would be another week or two Gaza op with widespread support among Arab govts, the usual atrocity claims, and a UNSC-imposed ceasefire.

Things aren't like they were last time. Egypt is in an anti-Moslem Brüderbund frame of mind and Ansar Beit al-Maqdisi and similar salafist groups in Sinai kind of rub their faces in the "terrorism is terrorism" thing. Obama is a cipher and Kerry a nitwit. They've alienated Netanyahu and U.S.-Israeli relations are the worst they've ever been. Therefore the U.S. can't bully Tel Aviv into a stupid ceasefire.

There's also the fact that they pounded Hezbollah to paste in 2006 (remember Green Helmet Guy?) and the Hezbullies have been crowing about their Famous Victory ever since. Hamas tried the same "declare victory in the rubble" routine the last time the IDF came knocking. Remember they were going to "destroy Hamas?" This time there's no such claim. They intend to destroy the tunnel infrastructure.

The final thing is that the Hamas atrocity claims have also worn thin. You can't replay the same movie over and over every few years and expect the public to continue showing up and believing in it. The revelations about command centers under hospitals and rockets stored in schools are a little too putrid for all but the True Believer to buy them.

#12  3 murder/kidnappings likely a trial attack and Israel starts getting a clue about the tunnels so Hamas begins a rocket attack early.

Best laid plans and all that jazz.

#11  #10 if Hamas was planning the tunnel offensive for sept 27, why did it begin rocket attacks against Israel in early July --

Asked to not disturb the elections.

I wonder about that too. Maybe that kidnapping wasn't planned or else things just spun out of control after the kidnapping. Also possible that some of the Gazooks with rockets didn't get the memo. Well, you know about the best laid plans of mice and men especially in Gaza.

#8  re: #6 something suspicious about this

The report says Bibi N. informed the security cabinet about the plan last week.

My suspicion is that he and his inner circle knew about the Hamas plan for some time and began taking preemptive actions against the tunnels before they became a problem.

Hamas, not looking kindly at this action, began launching the rockets, thus bringing us to where we are today.

Just my 2-cents.

#7  I'll bet there are a bunch of tunnels that have been started but not finished. These could be a huge problem, especially if all that's left to do is dig out the exit.
