Checkpoint near Benghazi targeted in suicide attack, one killed
2014-06-14
[Iraq Sun] A jacket wallah driving a boom-mobile hit a police post outside the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, killing at least one person and wounding five coppers, officials said Thursday.

The boom-mobile went kaboom! Wednesday evening in Barsis, 50 km east of the port city, security service spokesperson Ibrahim Al-Sharaa said.

Sharaa said that the car was driven at a very high speed before explosives were detonated at the check post, run by forces belonging to renegade General Khalifa Haftar.

Haftar is currently leading a military campaign against Benghazi's Islamist militia brigades.

Rooters quoted an unnamed army official as saying that "there are body parts spread all over ...so we first thought two people had been killed".

Police officer Khaled Al-Agouri said the attack happened when the bomber "drove a refrigerated lorry which he went kaboom! upon arrival at the post".

He said there are human remains at the site but it is not yet definite whether they all belong to the bomber or if there are other fatalities, too.

Media reports citing station commander Suleiman Al-Agouri confirmed the death of the unknown bomber.

He said that five of his officers had been injured during the attack.

Al-Agouri said there had been a large amount of explosives in the car. "The kaboom created a big crater" in the ground, he said.

This was the second attack since December last year at the checkpoint. The attack in December left 13 people dead.
