| US Promises to Stand by Iraq, Offers Support to Combat Militants |

| [Tolo News] Washington vowed Wednesday to boost aid to Iraq and is mulling drone strikes amid fears Iraqi forces are crumbling in face of turbans increasingly emboldened since the US withdrawal. Iraqi officials have already privately asked the US to consider sending in drones to root out turbans from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant ... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original... (ISIL), who in a lightning offensive have seized a swathe of the north. The request has been turned down in the past, but Washington is now weighing possibilities for more military assistance to Storied Baghdad, including drone strikes, a US official told AFP on condition of anonymity. Resorting to such aircraft -- which remain highly controversial in Afghanistan and Pakistain -- would mark a dramatic shift in the US engagement in Iraq, after the last American troops pulled out in late 2011. "The United States has been fast to provide necessary support for the people and government of Iraq," National Security Advisor Susan Rice told a Washington think-tank. "We are working together to roll back aggression and counter the threat" posed by ISIL to Iraq and the region, Rice said. But she insisted the US "must do more to strengthen our partners' capacity to defeat the terrorist threat on their home turf by providing them the necessary training, equipment and support." State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki stressed there were no current plans to send US troops back to Iraq, where around 4,500 Americans died in the eight-year conflict. She also denied the offensive, in which the turbans seized northern djinn-infested Mosul ... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn... and then Tikrit, had caught Washington by surprise or marked a failure of US policy in the country it invaded in 2003. The United States has repeatedly warned of the dangers of ISIL and has already expedited arms shipments to Iraq this year and ramped up training for Iraqi security forces. |

#11  Air power for ground attack seems doable. ISIL black hats are fighting conventionally and not trying to blend in providing a target rich environment. But ground attack needs boots on the ground to direct it. Like the early days in Afghanistan but without the mountains. Is JSOC looking for something else to do? |

| #3 The only "support" that would work right now would be the insertion of a full light infantry brigade into Balad, to create a stop line, and then a full mech division to roll it back, with SF in the north to help direct the Kurds. Thats not going to happen, so get ready for a replay of Saigon, with all the iraqis who helped us desperately trying to get their families into the US Embassy in Baghdad to get evac out. |

Using reverse Susan Rice logic this means that we haven't provided the necessary support which is, ta-DA, one reason why Iraq is failing. I am glad that Rice makes it so easy to get to the truth. |
