#6  I recommend The Twilight Warriors, Robert Gandt. Focuses on the airmen on both sides, but includes all events around Okinawa, such as the charge of the Yamato.

I was wondering that too Bobby; I read Malta Convoy, a good read for a air/road trip. Ridiculous.

#5  Them Exocets don't look so scary once you've seen a Kate driven by 130 IQ points carry a 1000 lb AP warhead + Gasoline + Kinetic Energy.

#4  Made me think of a similar story about the SS Ohio towed into Malta's harbor so badly damaged that when they pumped off the oil in her holds, she sank. An excellent book - Moses, Sam (2006). At All Costs: How a Crippled Ship and Two American Merchant Marines Turned the Tide of World War II.

#3  My father in law was exec officer on the ship on the early 60's. It's now at Patriots Point in Charleston SC. The wife and I went to a couple of the ship reunions with him and I've met some of the crew that were in that fight. AP is right on from the stories I heard.

#2  Great ship and great crew!

A battle where American sailors fought to live
and Japanese pilots fought to die.
