Charlotte, NC, mayor resigns after being charged with public corruption, taking bribes
2014-03-28
  1. [WBT] Mayor Patrick Cannon was getting ready to close the deal with the big-time developer, but was reluctant to take a briefcase containing $20,000 while sitting in his city office.

  2. "I just got to be conscious about that kind of stuff here, you know," Cannon told the fictitious developer, who was, in fact, an undercover FBI agent.

  3. Yet when the "developer" left, the briefcase, given to Cannon in exchange for his offer to pull strings with important city officials, stayed behind, according to court documents.

  4. Cannon was arrested Wednesday and accused of accepting more than $48,000 in bribes from undercover FBI agents posing as businessmen who wanted to do work with North Carolina's largest city. He resigned Wednesday evening, less than six months after taking office.

  5. It was a stunning fall for the 47-year-old Democrat who had risen from the city's public housing projects to become a successful businessman and politician.

  6. According to the criminal complaint, Cannon accepted more than $48,000 in cash, airline tickets, a hotel room and the use of a luxury apartment as bribes and solicited more than $1 million more. If convicted on all charges, Cannon faces up to 50 years in prison and more than $1 million in fines.

#14  Barbara, this is just battlespace preparation. By November, this will all be old news. Watch for a series of corruption charges against Republican office holders and candidates (if possible) in September - October.

#12  I'm waiting for the next round, where it involves unexplained deaths like self-inflicted gunshot wounds, automobile accidents, drowning, accidental overdoses...

#11  The democratic party has run unchecked internally, and protected by the liberal media for years now. The corruption is so rampant that its easy pickings for the FBI. Community organizers are usually tied to unions and their corruption goes to the core of their existence. Our president packages his corruption poorly and is defiant of the law. The Obama care waivers to the unions, the SEIU, are a couple of examples of blatant involvement in corrupt practices. The rest of the party, running unchecked by the media, are flamboyant in their corruption and outright lies made on the record in congress and in public. They are one step away from fascism...

#10  I wondered when I would read that he was a democrat--it was the fifth paragraph (short paragraphs too). It was a stunning fall for the 47-year-old Democrat who had risen from the city's public housing projects to become a successful businessman and politician.

Not so stunning; rather more like "to be expected from the corruptacrat party." What Oldspook said also.

#9  It looks like making Public arrests BEFORE the election is the disguise they want to portray, "LOOK, LOOK, SEE WE GOT THEM, VOTE US NOT THEM, a vote Democratic is a CLEAN vote. (To quote a very old slogan "DON'T YOU BELIEVE IT")
