Chicago plans to pay parents $25 to pick up their children's report cards
2012-11-01
Parents are being persuaded to get more involved in their children's education with $25 gift cards.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the scheme that will see vouchers for Walgreen being handed out.

Parents will receive the vouchers provided they pick up their students' report cards and participate in parent-teacher conferences.

The scheme will be trialed at 70 public schools in Chicago Public Schools that have a problem engaging parents.

'This is a way, in my view, of incentivizing responsible parenting,' Emanuel told a news conference at Field Elementary School, Ashland.

Hmm. Might work because it's about enough to pay for a good hit of their drug of choice.

#13  The folks who are getting the free stuff don't like the folks who are paying for the free stuff, because the folks who are paying for the free stuff can no longer afford to pay for both the free stuff and their own stuff.

And, the folks who are paying for the free stuff want the free stuff to stop.

And the folks who are getting the free stuff want even more free stuff on top of the free stuff they are already getting!

Now... the people who are forcing the people who pay for the free stuff have told the people who are RECEIVING the free stuff that the people who are PAYING for the free stuff are being mean, prejudiced, and racist.

So... the people who are GETTING the free stuff have been convinced they need to hate the people who are paying for the free stuff by the people who are forcing some people to pay for their free stuff and giving them the free stuff in the first place.

We have let the free stuff giving go on for so long that there are now more people getting free stuff than paying for the free stuff.

Now understand this. All great democracies have committed financial suicide somewhere between 200 and 250 years after being founded. The reason?

The voters figured out they could vote themselves money from the treasury by electing people who promised to give them money from the treasury in exchange for electing them.

The United States officially became a Republic in 1776, 236 years ago. The number of people now getting free stuffoutnumbers the people paying for the free stuff. We have one chance to change that in 2012. Failure to change that spells the end of the United States as we know it.

#11  These parents are the result of multi-generational welfare programs that have no demands for accountability. The programs, designed to help, have, in the end, destroyed families. The out of wedlock birth rate has skyrocketed, especially in the African American community. Yet if you try and address this issue head-on, you are labeled a racist. It is an incredible problem for our country, and one that is spreading very quickly beyond the inner city redoubts where is has been most visible and persistent. It is at the core of why there has to be a direct assault on the decline in social values in this country. Just fixing the budget alone won't solve the problem.

#10  Parents are only involved as much as they believe the value the activity is.

Apparently the parents see no value of it. Either through ignorance, or they see the rot of the system.

Or both.

#9  You want to get the parents involved in their kids education? Simple really.

Make every parent pay something out-of-pocket for that education. Yes welfare parents too. Use a sliding scale if you must but make sure *everyone* pays *something*.

And not just a penny - something noticeable.

#8  Warehousing of children is the prime justification for public schools in many parts of the US. Sad, but true.

#7  Better to make them PAY the full cost of their own child's education.

Subsidising education with poor cultural values just means schools get used as annoying kid warehouses.

#6  Like who, Labron James who attempted to enter the NBA before finishing high school? I'm forced to watch some of that wives and stars crap, and the only difference I can tell between the show and a trailor park is the price of the wine.

No, I'm afraid the generation of pro bball players who at least made the effort to get an education while in college is fading fast.

#5  This made me think of all those public service spots that big time athletes do.

They go into schools and tell the kiddies to stay in school and get an education, blah, blah, blah.

I'd like to see them go into the 'hood and tell the PARENTS to get it together and take care of their kids and education.

Think they could find enough to make it worthwhile? Me neither.

#4  Hey Rahm, the $25 you are throwing around so easily comes from the taxpayers. No wonder Chicago blows its budgets. How about making it a requirement for the parent to have a conference every each time a report card is issued? Report cards were at one time sent home with the student and signed off on by the parent(s) for return to the school. Why is it that politicians come up with so many cockamamie ideas to spend (redistribute) other people's money so easily? Of course, if your mom or dad is in prison or strung out on crack, it may not be so easy to get them to sign a report card or get them to show up at school.

#3  Didn't Donald Trump come out with a scheme similar to this a week or so ago? $5m per transcript wasn't it? Nothing new here.

Which is why stuffing more money into teachers/union pockets is never going to have an significant effect in raising scores, skills, and civility in the classroom. As long as there is no value assigned at home on education, its just going through the motions in school. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.
