Aussie terror suspect taken to the hospital
2012-09-13
An Australian man expected to be charged with terrorism offenses has been taken to the hospital suffering abdominal pains. It is unclear how serious his condition is.

The 23-year-old was arrested on Wednesday following a series of raids on 11 properties that uncovered guns and extremist propaganda. He is expected to be charged with collecting or making documents likely to facilitate terrorist acts, an offense that carries a maximum penalty of 15 years' jail.

Police took a number of items from the properties, including a USB memory stick containing violent extremist materials, computer equipment, registered firearms and fake firearms.

One of the properties raided was the Al-Furqan Islamic Information Centre, which Muslim leaders said was on the fringes of the Muslim community and its leader, Sheik Haron, was not a member of the mainstream Muslim society.

In a statement, Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner for Crime Steve Fontana said, "I would like to reassure people that we have not identified any immediate threats that pose immediate concerns to the safety of the community and we will continue to work to ensure that all steps are taken to protect all members of the community."

Kicks to the abdomen can result in serious conditions. So can swallowing a thumb drive.
