2012-07-26 |
Philippine security forces clashed with Muslim The Abu Sayyaf gunmen had initially attacked workers at a rubber plantation on the island and the military had rushed to the scene to repel them. Helicopter gunships were deployed to support the troops. Regional military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Randolph Cabangbang said, "The fighting is taking place in a forested area. Our troops are engaged in an intense running gunbattle." In previous weeks the same group of Abu Sayyaf fighters have launched similar attacks in Basilan, including an ambush that killed six farm workers and injured 22 on July 11, he said. The plantation workers' cooperative operating in the area had previously received extortion letters purportedly from the Abu Sayyaf demanding payment of over $1,000 a month in exchange for not being harmed. |

#3 Raider u are only right on 1 part meaning that ONLY ASG have jungle fighting in their blood. PNA are poorly equiped, badly motivated and lack of inteligent leadership. How ellse can u explaine that a loose badit group of 300 + figters kick their ass year after year. Offcourse there is good buisness for the generals that sell weapons to the ASG and sell other suplys to them, but thats another issue. Besides we talking about an not so big island here so its not like fighting the vietnam war. If they realy wanted they could finish them off very quickly when they were bleeding badly 4-5 years ago after loosing many hight rankng leaders. Instead they stoped going after them and let them rebuild their ranks. |

#2 It's what's not written between the lines - that counts in this story. You can bet that the clash was bloody and intense. Both sides know jungle fighting very well - it's in their blood and has been from hundreds of years back. |
