Senegal pulls out of Mali troops deal |

[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Senegal ... a nation of about 14 million on the west coast of Africa bordering Mauretania to the north, Mali to the east, and a pair of Guineas to the south, one of them Bissau. It is 90 percent Mohammedan and has more than 80 political parties. Its primary purpose seems to be absorbing refugees... will not contribute troops to the sub-regional force in Mali, the Senegalese News Agency has said. The news agency quoted President Macky Sall saying on Monday during his second trip to La Belle France that the country was feeling pressure maintaining hundreds of its soldiers in peacekeeping missions. President Sall said the country's army was already engaged in several peacekeeping missions. Senegalese peacekeepers are presently engaged with the United Nations ...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks... forces in the DR Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Sudan and Guinea Bissau. Terrorist attacks Analysts, however, attributed the President's decision to fear of reprisals by terrorist groups operating in the Maghreb and Sahel. Last week, the Senegalese security forces tossed in the clink I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece! seven Mauritanians and three Senegalese for allegedly planning terrorist attacks. The Al-Qaeda-backed Islamist groups, which control the northern part of Mali, threatened to attack Senegal if it contributed troops to unseat them. Senegal has endorsed an appeal by Economic Community Of West African States (Ecowas) to join Nigeria and Niger in contributing 3,270 troops to be deployed in Mali |
