#4  SteveS: Typically, dengue is "silent" in about 80% of cases, but in the other 20% it could become dengue fever, dengue shock syndrome, or the godawful hemorrhagic form, which acts much like ebola.

the first time a person gets dengue fever, they are just royally messed up for about three weeks, with the oddest symptoms, including every joint in their body hurting, edema, whole body rash, and mental instability.

But then they get better. Yet for unknown reasons, with a second infection, that might also be silent at first, it could turn into the hemorrhagic form, and they are in deep trouble.

The student nurse got the still deadly intermediate form of dengue shock syndrome, which like toxic shock syndrome is from bacterial toxins, but it is caused as a secondary effect, with GI bleeding caused by the dengue virus permitting a bacterial infection to kill the patient.

#2  Descriptions of deaths in the 1919 flu pandemic are similar to dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Its my suspicion that a second infection by a different strain of flu was the main cause of deaths in 1919.

#1  Interesting. I was not aware of dengue fever being fatal, just painful. However, a little googling suggests a more severe version of the disease, dengue hemorrhagic fever, results when the victim is infected with a different type of dengue fever virus.
