Syrian Kurds Begin to Flex |
2011-09-01 |
Summary of piece in Middle East Research Project With Assad weakening and active Kurdish interests in Iraq, Iran and Turkey, the Kurds of Syria are looking to leverage their numbers (about 10% of Syrian population) and strategic location (near the water and other resources) to gain more leverage in the anti Assad umbrella coalition. One of their demands is that the anti Assad coalition call their country "republic of Syria" rather than "Syrian Arab Republic". This mirrors, to some extent, the increased position the Berbers may ultimately have in Libya the Arab League isn't going to like this but there isn't much they can do about it |
