Kandahar suicide attack during funeral for Hamid Karzai's brother |
2011-07-14 |
A suicide bomber killed four, including a senior cleric, when he detonated inside a mosque at a memorial service for the assassinated brother of the Afghan president. The Red Mosque in Kandahar had been packed with dignitaries and family members praying for Ahmad Wali Karzai just before the attack witnesses said. Maulavi Hekmatullah Hekmat, head of KandaharÂ’s clerical council, died in the blast with three others and at least 15 were wounded. Early reports suggested the attacker had evaded security by placing his explosives in a turban. President Hamid Karzai had not been in the mosque at the time, his palace said. The attack came just two days after the assassination of southern Afghanistan's most powerful man and the creation of a power vacuum which many fear could escalate violence in the critical southern city. It also followed a United NationsÂ’ report that civilian deaths in the decade-long conflict had again hit record levels in the first six months of this year |

#6 I wish the reports would note how many Korans were destroyed in the suicide bombing. |

#5 A big high security fence doesn't necessarily protect one from a visit from the seals and a consequent acquaintanceship with the sharks. |

#4 Some place where he can buy some property with a big, high security fence. Abbottabad? |

#3 Will he still join the Taliban? If he's smart he'll have a pile of cash on hand and a jet out back all ready to go so he can get out of Dodge at a moment's notice. Switzerland, southern France, London. You know. Some place where he can buy some property with a big, high security fence. |

#2 Karzai is getting lonely, too bad he dissed the Americans and depended wholly on his dead bro. Will he still join the Taliban? |

#1 You would think that after funeral-bombings had been going on for a decade or more, a little pattern recognition would set in. |
