Iran temporarily closes airspace to Merkel sparking row |
2011-05-31 |
Iran delayed the arrival of Angela Merkel's plane as she flew to India by briefly closing its airspace, thus sparking a diplomatic row with Germany. Merkel was held up as she flew overnight for a meeting on Tuesday with India's prime minister. Before receiving permission to cross Iran, her plane was forced to circle over Turkey for two hours. Germany's foreign minister said that hindering Merkel's route was "absolutely unacceptable". German government sources in Berlin said Merkel's plane was only allowed to enter Iranian airspace after "intensive diplomatic intervention in Berlin and Tehran." |

#1 "her plane was forced to circle over Turkey for two hours" I don't pretend to be a commercial pilot, but couldn't her plane have used those two hours to fly around Iran? It ain't that big. |
