Libyan website reports rebels sink Gaddafi ships
2011-03-15
The rebels have an Air Force??
An opposition Libyan news website reported on Tuesday that rebels flying a MiG 23 warplane and a helicopter sank two pro-Gaddafi warships off the eastern coast near the town of Adjabiyah.

The Brnieq online newspaper quoted an unnamed airforce officer at the Benina airbase in Benghazi as saying the two aircraft also bombed an unspecified number of tanks near Brega and Ajdabiya, two towns that fell to pro-Gaddafi forces on Tuesday.

#5  As I understand it, at the beginning of the revolt, there were some MIGs in the Libyan AF and they were at the base near Tripoli.

Where they were yesterday, who knows.

#4  My first thought, confirmation. Second, if true, reporters can be idiots it could be any kind of warplane.

#3  Paging Baghdad Bob... I understand why they're doing this, though - the impulse of the ordinary soldier to avoid being the last man killed in a losing war is hard to resist. The last straw that triggers the complete disintegration of the rebels as a fighting force might be a simple rumor. I suspect the next few days will seeing a large number of rebels flee for their lives in the direction of Egypt, where they could pose a political problem for the Egyptians.

#1  Well, we know at least two planes and at least one helicopter flew to Malta. I thought those were Mirages, though, not MiGs.
