17 Die in Northern Mexico

A total of 17 individuals lost their lives in drug and gang related violence in northern Meixcan states including the assassination of a Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas police chief and five of his security detail.

  • Three unidentified individuals were shot to death in Juarez Wednesday night. The victims, two men and a woman were parked outside a convenience store near the intersection of Avenida Las Torres and Calle "B" in the Torres del PRI colony when they were shot. One of the victims driving a Pontiac Aztec van died at the scene while another attempted escape aboard a Pontiac Grand Am only to be killed near the corner of calles Reyes Estrada and Septima.

  • Three unidentified men were tortured and shot to death near Chihuahua, Chihuahua Wednesday night. The victims were found in a vacant lot north of the city with toys draped around their necks, and with signs of torture. A message was left at the scene saying the victims were car thieves.

  • A man in his 50s was found stabbed to death in Juarez Thursday. The victim was found stripped of clothing near the intersection of calles Grecia and Guadania.

  • A man in his 20s was shot to death in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora Wednesday. Irineo Cruz Garcia, 23, was apparently shot numerous times with an AK-47 assault rifle near the corner of calles Paris and Milan in the Bella Vista colony. He was aboard his Toyota Corolla when he was killed.

  • An unidentified man was found shot to death and hanged from a fence near the southern entrance of Imuris, Sonora Wednesday. The victim had been tortured prior to being shot.

  • Two unidentified men were found shot to death in Hermosillo, Sonora. The victims were found aboard a Ford Explorer SUV parked in a bank parking lot near the intersection of Bulevar García Morales and Calzada de los Ãngeles in the El Llano colony. Several .223 caliber and 9mm spent shell casings were found at the scene.

  • An unidentified man was found shot to death in a village near Mexicali, Baja California. The victim was found aboard a Dodge Durango SUV parked at the intersection of calle Tercera and Bolivia in village of Kilometro 57 in the Colonias Nuevas colony. An AK-47 assault rifle was used in the murder.

  • An unidentified Tijuana police officer was shot and wounded in Tijuana, Baja California Wednesday night. The officer, who was assigned to the tourism section, was aboard his official patrol vehicle when he was fired on. The assault took place in the Tres Octubre colony at about 2000 hrs. The officer is expected to survive his wounds.

  • The pickup truck of a US resident was fired on and damaged in Tijuana, Baja California Wednesday afternoon. Francisco Veloz was staying with his girlfriend in a hotel in Tijuana to visit her brother, could not explain why his vehicle was fired on. Veloz and his girlfriend were not in the vehicle were it was shot. The Chevrolet pickup truck was hit six times.

  • A Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas police chief and five others were shot to death in an ambush Wednesday in Nuevo Laredo. General Manuel Farfan Carriola, four unidentified bodyguards and his unidentified personal secretary were ambushed when an armed group blocked his convoy near the intersection of calles Venezuela and Plutarco Elias Calles. Farfan Carriola was formerly a police official in Michoacan before taking on his job as police chief. He had only been in office 32 days when he was murdered.
