Carter Redux?

It now turns out that in 2009, the Egyptian daily Almasry Alyoum reported that President Obama secretly met with representatives of the jihadist Muslim Brotherhood,

#10  That was no secret. If Obama screws up this Middle East too, there will be HELL to pay America. If the administrations answer to this is ElBaradei, Congress needs to put cease and desist orders on the President and contain him like North Korea until you have a decent operator at the helm. Other people know what to do in these situations.Omar Suleiman is a fantastic pick for VP. A serious man who does not even want power. Thats an acceptable reform. Also, what ever happened to Noor?

#9  First off, folks, let go of any residual suspicion that events injurious to American national interests aren't part of Obama's overall plan. This man spent all his formative years marinating in a stew of postmodern Marxist radicalism, anti-Westernism and anti-Americanism, so why should anyone assume that as president, he wouldn't chart a foreign policy based on magnifying the influences he's absorbed for more than thirty years?

#7  We all knew that Hosni was going to run out of Grecian formula one day, and that his son is a clownfish swimming in a tank of sharks.

Having very quiet meetings with various members of the opposition, therefore, isn't a bad idea.

BUT: you don't have the President run the meeting!

This is a meeting that should be run by CIA operatives, or by embassy personnel, very quiet, all deniable, no recordings, no minutes and no agenda other than to find out what the opposition wants and what they plan to do to get it.

Further, we (the US) should have had these meetings with ALL the various parts of the opposition. If indeed there's a democratic core out there, find it.

Then the diplomats and spooks report back to Washington, and then the President can make a presumably informed decision.

But if Bambi himself was conducting this meeting, it goes beyond mere incompetence to a near god-like hubris.

#5  NS, that "least worst" perspective is HIS not the US's. He wants the radical Mooslimbs to take over as much as possible. That's part of his plan to scuttle the US.

#4  At the end of the day you have to figure Mubarik is 80 and doesn't have a successor. Who is gonna be next? Do you fight that and have them hate you (as in Cuba and Iran) or do you try to have it both ways so that they are at least indifferent.

There is also the chance that this was to put pressure on Mubarik who would have known through his own sources.
