| #3 Perhaps refugees from the collapse of La Frontera economy instead? In my mind what happened is this: Mexico sets up the border cities as a free trade zone. American companies move billions in manufacturing there. Millions move to La Frontera as jobs open up. China comes online and crushes La Frontera economy... even with NAFTA and better productivity they cannot compete with Chicom wages. Drug gangs employ thousands of newly unemployed. Thousands more flee. Border towns return to some sustainable level of population, closer to what they looked like in the early 80's than they do now. |
