[El Universal] The National Statistics Institute (INE) said that the percentage of households in poverty, as measured by income, grew slightly to 26.8 percent at the end of the first half of the year. The percentage of households in poverty in the same period last year stood at 26.4 percent, a 0.4 percent increase compared to the previous period.
ElÃas Eljuri, the president of INE, said that the most recent result "means that Venezuela has managed to maintain the statistical stability in one of the most sensitive social variables, despite the fact that the global economic crisis has caused a declined in the country's oil revenues."
