Britain's industrial decline |

[Al Jazeera] Britain's Conservative-led government says tax havens offer a solution to the country's huge budget deficit. But some say the country's biggest problem is that it is no longer a major manufacturer. Take the automobile industry. Time was when Britain was a leading manufacturer of cars, and Coventry - where many of the factories were located - was the nation's pride. Even today, as Al Jizz's Laurence Lee reports from the town, local residents have not forgotten that the collapse of UK's industries coincided with Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government. |

#2 Time was when Britain was a leading manufacturer of cars, and Coventry - where many of the factories were located - was the nation's pride. Really? In the late 60s both the Germans and Japanese gained a sufficient foothold in America which they would go on to exploit after the Arab Oil embargo that would propel their products into a larger share of the market. Where were the British? Something about quality control and reputation thereof? |

#1 The 'collapse' preceded Maggie Thatcher. What Thatcher did was to end their protected and subsidized existence and consequently shift productive resources into growth industries like financial services. |
