FBI links 3 shootings in US
2010-10-30
[Straits Times] AUTHORITIES have linked a shooting this week at a vacant Marine Corps recruiting station in Virginia to two other recent and similar attacks on military buildings, US media reported on Thursday.

Citing FBI officials, The Washington Post said ballistics tests have linked bullets found at the recruiting office in Chantilly, Virginia on Tuesday with others recovered last week at the Pentagon and the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

All three shootings just outside the capital Washington took place overnight or in the early morning hours. The museum shooting was discovered on Oct 17, and shots were fired at the Pentagon two days later. No suspect has been found and no one was injured in the attacks.

Although authorities have declined to discuss the type of weapon used or the calibre of the ammunition, police suspect the shooter used a high-velocity rifle.

The case comes amid growing concerns over terror threats in Europe and the United States and only months after an American gunman walked up to the Pentagon's main entrance and opened fire, wounding two police officers before he was shot dead.

Police introduced tighter security after the March assault, though the Pentagon has been heavily guarded since the attacks of Sept 11, 2001, when a hijacked plane slammed into the building.
