Nork Food Shortage About 1 Million Tons | |
2010-10-26 | |
The World Food Programme estimates North Korea has one million metric tons of food less than it needs to feed its population this year. Josette Sheeran, the executive director of the Rome-based UN food agency, told reporters in Japan on Tuesday that she will travel to the North to urge Pyongyang to provide enough food and nutrition for its hunger-stricken people. Adding that up to 50-percent of children in North Korea are malnourished, she said that the WFP will provide food to some 600,000 young children and pregnant women there. Sheeran also called for global assistance for the UN food branch in the communist country, saying it is only 22 percent funded and needs urgent support.
